CD REVIEW - Dean Edgecombe – CANBERRA BLUES SOCIETY – MARCH 2022
Better Together – Pacey King & Doley
(Recorded November 2021)

Shane Pacey, Sally King and Clayton Doley, supergroup? Probably about as close to one as you’ll find in the Australian blues scene and the three of them, ably supported by David Green on bass and Davo Fester on drums, have come up with something pretty special.
“Better Together” is an eclectic mix of styles that mostly reflects the backgrounds of the performers. The song writing is shared equally, four songs each, with everyone contributing to each other’s material. Shane Pacey’s songs are steeped in the blues. A couple of Sally King’s sound like they could have been recorded at Motown or Stax and Clayton Doley’s could be pretty much anything that utilises Hammond organ or piano. He takes us deep into Meters, Neville Brothers territory with “Burn It” and pushes “Positivity” with a rev’d up “Green Onions” kind of feel.
As you would expect, the playing on this album is outstanding. Clayton Doley is a word class Hammond player and Shane Pacey has an incredible instinct for playing the right notes at the right time. The rhythm section of Davo Fester and David Green would enhance the front line of any band.
David Green does a wonderful job of channeling James Jamerson on Sally King’s “Right Now”.
There are no weak tracks on the album but for me, the standouts are Shane’s “Man Serves the Money”, Sally King’s “Right Now” and Clayton’s “Burn It”. Special mention must go to Sally’s “Come Back Jimi”, an ode to Jimi Hendrix which collages lyric snippets from many of Jimi’s songs. Quite cleverly done.
Everyone on this album is involved in various musical projects which may limit their longevity and/or availability. If you get a chance to see them, take it. On the strength of “Better Together” you’ll be in for a pretty good time.
